Landscaping in Stoke Bishop
This project involved large scale landscaping, both in terms of the size of the garden and the extent of the transformation required. Large mature trees provided a perfect backdrop for a new garden design bringing together nature and modern living in a harmonious way.
Working from an existing design amedments were made along the way as the space became more apparent and the clients had more chance to consider their requirements. |
Stage 1. Clearance and levelling
Access was to provide some challenges along the way with a narrow side path our only way in and out.
Many of the existing plants and trees needed to be removed to accomodate the new split level design, and stumps were ground away to make room for new planting.
Some of the more interesting specimins were to either remain or be carefully taken out for later replanting.

Stage 2. Footings and surface preparation
The entire far end of the garden was to be raised up to create a second tier, creating distinct areas and improving the view from the house
Gabion baskets were used for some of the retaining walls which helped recycle a lot of existing stone from a large rockery area that would have otherwise needed to be removed and disposed of.
In total more than 80 tonnes of material was excavated and either relocated or removed from site.

Once the main levelling work had been carried out we then turned our attention to preparing the ground for landscaping.
Substantial footings were installed to accomodate the new walls and steps as well as a pad for a large summer house selected by the clients.
Long winding paths and a central patio required considerable compacted stone bases. At this stage the clients were regularly consulted to ensure everything would be positioned as intended.

Stage 3. Walls and steps
Rendered and painted blockwork walls would define the boundary between the new levels. Textured coping stones were selected to match the edging and paving on the circular patio.
The transition between the two levels was either via a set of paved steps or a winding path to the right.

Stage 4. Edging, paving and paths
More than 200 linear metres of edging was installed in concrete to define boundaries between paths, patio, lawns and beds. Setting the blocks in a concealed chanel of concrete guarantees longevity whilst maintaing a natural look.
Indian sandstone was used for the circular patio where as the long winding paths were constructed using self binging gravel which offers a firm, clean alternative to gravel.

Stage 5. Finishing off
Interlocking circular lawns on the upper tier were installed along with a sizable wooden composter to recycle green waste and provide food for the considerable amount of planting that was to occur.
Three wooden arches and stepping stones were to offer a new route through the garden and provide additional height to provide greater visual appeal.

The finished product!!
This was definately one of those projects where you can clearly see the transformation taking place and get excited to see the finished result. We were not to be disappointed as the finished garden was to prove visually stunning.
Every garden requires a different approach in terms of scale, detail and surrounding environment. This particular garden required grand vision and scale which was achieved within a short winter period.

"We are very pleased with the work that Bristol Landscaping Services carried out for us. Our garden needed a complete overhaul and presented a few challenges along the way. Dave proved to be a very good problem-solver; he has good vision and always took time to get things right. He and his team worked hard, to a high standard and were all reliable and pleasant to have around. We highly recommend Bristol Landscaping Services."
